Taking on Asthma is a national program to improve the quality of care provided to people with asthma and enhance their quality of life. America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) launched the Taking on Asthma initiative in 2001 to support health insurance plans as they design and offer comprehensive care management of asthma. Health insurance plans provide innovative care models for managing asthma, reducing its complications, and improving the overall health status of individuals with the disease.
The current initiative is sponsored by America's Health Insurance Plans and is supported through a cooperative agreement with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA). The goal of the expanded initiative, Taking on Asthma: Communication, Education, and Outreach, is to develop approaches that educate health insurance plans and their provider networks about the importance of integrating evidence-based environmental management into asthma management programs. This initiative is based on the premise that health insurance plans have a unique opportunity to offer evidence-based asthma management programs that include the management of environmental asthma triggers, including irritants such as secondhand smoke and major indoor allergens such as dust mites, cockroaches, pet dander, and mold.
The Taking on Asthma initiative was originally developed in collaboration with the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) which remains engaged in ongoing activities of this initiative.
America's Health Insurance Plans' aim is to collect and disseminate proven resources and tools that health insurance plans can use to improve the overall quality of asthma care. Please continue to visit this website to access new and updated information.
