The 2004 Grant for Innovation in Asthma Care - Grant Winner

Health Plan of Nevada - Las Vegas, Nevada: Second-to-None

The Second-to-None Program is designed to promote successful smoking cessation by parents of children with asthma in an effort to reduce the environmental asthma trigger of second hand smoke in their homes. Under this project, Health Plan of Nevada (HPN) will increase efforts to identify and refer parents of asthmatic children to an existing three-month Nicotine Dependence Clinic Program, and develop an education module that will be incorporated into the Nicotine Dependence Clinic curriculum. The module will educate participants on the disease process of pediatric asthma, the mechanics of second hand smoke as an environmental asthma trigger, the benefits of a cleaner home environment, and the behavior changes necessary to bring about that environment. The health plan expects to increase participation in the Nicotine Dependence Clinic Program by parents of asthmatic children and believes that the customized education module will help parents better understand the environmental impact that their smoking has on their children’s asthma and therefore be motivated to make the lifestyle changes necessary to create a healthier home environment.
