CME/CE Courses Improve Asthma Care Management through AHIP's Cross-Cultural Training Module

AHIP’s Quality Interactions: A Patient-Based Approach to Cross-Cultural Care is a free, continuing medical education course for physicians. Through an interactive patient case study on asthma, physicians can improve their ability to effectively communicate with, and care for patients from diverse backgrounds. This module also discusses the business, medical, and legal reasons why cultural competence is essential in the practice of medicine. Managing Environmental Risk Factors to Improve Asthma Care
The on-line course, Managing Environmental Risk Factors to Improve Asthma Care, was sponsored by AHIP for the annual Case Management Society of America conference. The on-line course provides case managers:

  • an overview of the evidence-based guidelines for asthma, and includes the role of environmental allergens and irritants in the treatment of asthma, and
  • provides insight for the development of a comprehensive multi-disciplinary asthma initiative from the perspective of a health insurance plan.

It provides a step-by-step framework that any health insurance plan could follow to design, implement, and evaluate an asthma home visit program. Recognizing the Environmental Role in Asthma Management Programs (September-October 2005)
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2005 Environmental Leadership Award in Asthma management went to Optima Health, a Service of Sentara Healthcare, and Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics.  This article describes their respective asthma management programs which achieved positive health outcomes, improved awareness, and have reduced the exposure of environmental triggers for asthma sufferers.

Approaches to Asthma Management: An Assessment of Health Insurance Plans (January-February 2005)
In 2004 AHIP conducted an assessment of health insurance plans to capture the latest information on asthma management programs and examine the findings in light of the evidence-based guidelines of effective asthma care and management. This article highlights the findings and identifies new opportunities for integrating guidelines and effective interventions into asthma management programs.

Health Plans Reach Out to the Underserved (July-August 2004)
This article highlights several health plans across the nation who are forming partnerships with community organizations, collecting and analyzing members’ health claims data, enrolling patients into disease and care management programs and increasing bilingual communication efforts to identify and reach out to undeserved and minority populations.

Case Management Evolves: Asthma Care Points the Way (May-June 2004)
This article focuses on the evolution of case management from simple administrative tasks to the current coordination of health care needs of patients with chronic conditions such as asthma, and the discovery of real value in case management to improve quality of care.  Successes in Asthma management are highlighted.
